Chinyelu Susan “Chi” Onwurah was born on April 12, 1965 in Wallsend, Newcastle to a Nigerian father who was a dentist and an English mother. When she was little, her family came to back to Awka in Anambra state Nigeria but unfortunately, the Nigerian Biafran war started with famine included, which made her mother to return back to Newcastle with her children while her father fought in the Biafran war. She is a British Labour Party politician, who was elected at the 2010 general election as the Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne Central.

In 1987, Chi graduated from Imperial College London with a degree in Electrical Engineering, with her qualification, she worked in hardware and software development, product management, market development and strategy for a variety of mainly private sector companies in a number of different countries – Britain, France, US, Nigeria and Denmark while studying for an MBA at Manchester Business School.
