Skiibii Mayana, aka Swaggerlee of Africa, he was born 5 July, 1992 as Abbey Elias. The name Skiibii originated in his early years, when a fond uncle nicknamed the lad Skiibii. His mother caught onto the it, and began to actively used it. The uncle later revealed that ‘Skiibii’ meant “a smart and sharp person” and “mayana” is a Spanish word which means tomorrow or future.
Skiibi started music in secondary school, where he was a rapper. From rap, he got to study the increased influence of Afrobeat sounds, hence he switched to secular music.
Music for Mayana has always been a dream. In 2014, the singer revealed that in an interview with Encomium. Abbey was of the belief that life is beautiful, hence he was a funny and cheerful man. He started music when he was in JSS 1, with rap with among his friends. Skiibii encountered a number of challenges when he made the announcement to his parents about his choice of career. His father was actively against his song delving into music, or getting involved in any music related activity. But he trudged on, and convinced him.
Skiibii was signed to Five Star Music on December 24, 2014, with a lavish signing event which had the hitherto unknown act receive a brand new 2014 Hyundai SUV.
Prior to the announcement some years back, he has actively been involved with Kcee. He was also mildly involved during Kcee’s singing days with Presh. He had fun at it, appreciating the Five Star Music platform.
His first official single was released in January 2015. It is a catchy dancehall tune which featured the record label flagship act Kcee. Skiibii also was featured in a single by producer Chimbalin, titled ‘Kilimanjaro’. Other acts on the song include Harrysong, Debi J, Dezign, Houston Grey, Wealth and Yung Issy.
