Gugu Mbatha-raw was born on April 21, 1983 in Oxford, England to Patrick Mbatha a doctor originally from South Africa and an English nurse Anne Raw. She is an English stage and film actress who came to limelight in a recurring role in Doctor Who, playing Tish Jones, sister of Martha Jones. Her real name is Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha.

Gugu’s fame in America productions with a supporting role in the Tom Hanks comedy Larry Crowne, and starring roles in the short-lived television series Undercovers and Touch. She has featured in the following TV series; Bonekickers, Trial & Retribution, Easy, Touch, Black Mirror, Vital Signs and many others. She attended the Henry Box School and participated in the National Youth Theatre, having been interested in acting, dance, and musical theatre from a young age.[10] In 2001 she moved to London to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
