Born on October 4, 1916 in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape. and died on January 18, 2006. Anton Edward Rupert was a billionaire businessman, philanthropist, and conservationist. He started the tobacco company “Voorbrand” in the 1940s. The name of the company was later changed to Rembrandt Ltd., whose overseas tobacco interests were consolidated into Rothmans in 1972. While growing up it wasn’t all that easy for him, he dropped out of medical school due to a lack of funds, but later earned a chemistry degree at the University of Pretoria.
Anton is the father of Johann Rupert who is the CEO of Richemont and chairman of Remgro. His business career lasted for about 60 years and he started it with only £10 in 1941 becoming named on the Forbes list of 500 wealthiest families worldwide. At the time of his death his assets were estimated at $1.7 billion.
