Rachel Zawadi Luttrell is a Tanzanian-Canadian actress that was born on January 19, 1971 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to Veronica Makihio Shenkunde Luttrell of the Washambala tribe of The Usambara Mountains, and Dr. William Leon Luttrell from Bossier City, Louisiana. At only the age of 5, her family left Tanzania for Canada and while growing up, she studied ballet at the Russian Academy of Classical Ballet School and also studied piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

The actress is well known for playing the role of Teyla Emmagan on sci-fi television series Stargate Atlantis. Other movies she has featured are; Everyday Use, Stop Thief!, Feast of All Saints, Hardwired and many others. She got married to her husband Loyd Bateman and they have two kids together, Ridley Asha Bateman and Caden Dar Bateman.
